RV Battery Maintenance: Keep House Batteries Healthy Between Every Trip
Stop returning to a dead house bank. Learn how to maintain lead-acid, AGM, and Lithium RV batteries between trips with a Battery Tender® charger and maintainer.
RV Solar Power Systems: Battery Charging for Off-Grid Camping
Set up solar charging for off-grid RV camping. Battery Tender® solar controllers and charger and maintainers for AGM and Lithium house battery systems.
RV and camper battery systems typically use one or more 12V deep-cycle batteries for the house bank — powering lights, appliances, and electronics — and a separate 12V starting battery for the engine. The Battery Tender® PowerTender® 3 to 5 Amp Multi-Chemistry charges and maintains both lead-acid and Lithium house batteries efficiently overnight. For full-time RV use or rapid recovery of large deep-cycle banks, the PowerTender® 8 to 15 Amp handles up to 250Ah banks and transitions automatically to ISM float maintenance when charging is complete.
Yes — this is the primary use case for Battery Tender® chargers and maintainers. ISM (Infinite Sequential Monitoring™) charges the battery fully, then delivers a precisely regulated float current that holds peak voltage indefinitely without overcharging. For RVs in seasonal storage, a Battery Tender® charger and maintainer prevents the sulfation that permanently destroys deep-cycle batteries during extended discharge. Connect it through shore power at the storage facility, or run it via a Battery Tender® solar charger and maintainer at remote storage locations.
Most RV house banks use 12V flooded lead-acid, AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat), or sealed maintenance-free deep-cycle batteries. AGM is increasingly standard for its spill-proof sealed design and tolerance for partial charge states. Lithium (LiFePO4) is rapidly growing in RV applications for significantly higher usable capacity, lighter weight, and longer cycle life. Battery Tender® PowerTender® Multi-Chemistry chargers and maintainers support all three chemistries — select lead-acid or Lithium on the chemistry selector and ISM delivers the correct charging profile for each.
Connect a Battery Tender® PowerTender® charger and maintainer to each battery bank and leave it connected throughout winter storage — via shore power at a storage facility or via a Battery Tender® solar charger and maintainer at off-grid locations. For AGM house batteries, ISM float charging prevents sulfation and plate corrosion. For Lithium house banks, set the Multi-Chemistry selector to Lithium — ISM then delivers the correct LiFePO4 charging and maintenance protocol. Disconnect shore power cables and use the Battery Tender® as the sole power source to the battery bank during storage to prevent trickle drain from other RV systems.
A starting battery delivers a large burst of current for a short period to start the engine, then recharges immediately from the alternator. Deep-cycle batteries discharge slowly and deeply over hours to power RV house loads — lights, appliances, inverters, and electronics. Using a starting battery for house loads destroys it quickly; using a deep-cycle for engine starting reduces its lifespan. Battery Tender® PowerTender® chargers and maintainers maintain both types correctly — at the appropriate output and chemistry for each bank's battery type.
For remote storage or off-grid use, a solar panel paired with a Battery Tender® solar charger and maintainer keeps the RV house bank topped off year-round without shore power. The unit regulates the solar input to deliver the correct charging cycle and float maintenance voltage, preventing both overcharge from excess solar and discharge during low-light periods. For full solar charging of large deep-cycle or Lithium banks, pair a high-wattage panel with a dedicated MPPT charge controller rated for the bank Ah capacity and chemistry.
